For centuries designers and planners have tried to remedythe urban consequence of the slum. Today, with the ever increasingdisparity between developed nations and the third world, theseattempts by the privileged to aid in improving the living conditionsof the impoverished often overlook the organic origins of the slumdefined by local culture, tradition, climate, resource limits, ecology, and economy. Applying the building ideals of one culture and region toanother does not address the natural progress of tectonics and style.
