The laws of thermodynamics limit the efficiency of machines. Similarly, machines for living squander energy and materials, exhausting resources and consuming energy in ways that negatively impact our climate. The metaphor of buildings as machines implies an antithetical relationship with the natural world, one that uses force and great amounts of energy as the solution to all design problems. A new metaphor or paradigm is needed, one that embraces existing and potentially new suitable technologies and takes its cue from the natural world. It is no longer appropriate to create machines for living, I propose a new paradigm for creative architectural thought and design: the new metaphor for architecture of the future is living machines
