This thesis investigates how to enhance face-to-face interaction among college students and how differences among people can be productively engaged. The assumption is not that architecture causes human interaction but rather it affords possibilities and sometimes provokes interaction among people. There are many architectural components that effect inhabitants: the configuration of the built environment, lighting, programmatic layout, material, etc. The focus of this research will be the effects of movements and organization, but all aspects will be considered. This thesis is also about looking at diversifying environment; the scale of space, relationship of interior to exterior, and breaking the uniformity that is seen on collage campuses. The final design will be of a new student interactive space for the Rensselaer campus in Troy, New York. The design of this project will not be programmatically similar to the institutionalized notion of a “student union”. This is a new type of space
