School of Architecture 5th year final project publication

Fear and architecture are strongly related. Designing for the alleviation of fear has been practiced in many different applications. In recent years, designing in extreme weather conditions has become a major architectural focus. The Great Plains of the United States is home to an extreme weather condition that is rarely approached in the field of architecture, tornadoes. The onset of tornado season in the late spring causes widespread fear. This fear can include vulnerability, fear of the unknown, and constant anxiety. The probability of a tornado hitting a town is very small but the probability that in the town there is a consensus on a feeling of fear about a tornado is large. Alleviating the fear of one’s surroundings for unpredictably is the main focus of this thesis. While focusing on the fear of tornadoes, this thesis creates a pleasant and attractive underground living space that eases the fear and typical feelings of being in a submerged atmosphere
