The building and naming of the cathedral is recounted in a legend of the vision of St. Gregory in which Christ pointed to the spot where the church should be built; naming the church Ejmiadzin meaning the place where the Lord’s only begotten son descended to earth. The Cathedral has been rebuilt many times over the last 1500 years starting with the first rebuilding in 480 A.D., the most recent restoration being in 1955-1965. Originally thought to be built in the basilica style, the cathedral today retains its 5th century form while reflecting every style over the centuries that rebuilding and restoration occurred. The Cathedral includes a monastery of the same name, Catholicos’ Palace, Seminary, Library and Printing House. 5th century CE 1982 Images Digital Tiff; Jpeg2000 A-0001 Parsegian, V.L..
