The Lantern and the Bird

The Lantern and the Bird Okaly, Kyle Student projects Fear Decision making EMAC Thesis project. Completed as part of the requirements for the B.S. in Electronic Media, Arts, and Communication (EMAC) This EMAC thesis project is a video narrative entitled The Lantern and the Bird. It follows an unnamed protagonist's recurring dream, in which he enters a portal to a world he considers perfect (Screen shot 1), but is terrorized by a phantom throughout his stay (Screen shot 2). He searches for "the lantern," which he believes will protect him from the phantom, while avoiding "the bird," which lives in a forest that even the phantom is afraid to enter (Screen shot 3). He meets two friends along the way, each of whom has dealt with similar situations in the past in a less-than-ideal way. He eventually discovers that the lantern he has been searching for does not exist, and his friends encourage him to leave the alternate reality altogether before the phantom returns--which usually ends the dream. This time, however, he decides to face his fear of the bird and enter the forest, hoping that he finds a way to deal with the phantom within. The Lantern and the Bird is a surreal video narrative about unattainable goals, decision making, and fear. A primary focus was placed on composing the video's soundtrack. This two-minute excerpt features the most elaborate musical cue of the piece. The School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. (Troy NY: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 2009) Rolnick, Neil.
