It's construction continued until the mid 13th century. In the 12th and 13th centuries Kecharis was a major religious center in Armenia. It also hosted a school of higher learning. The complex consists of three churches (St. Grigor, St. Nshan and the Kat'oghike), two chapels and a vestry (gavit), to the west of which is another church (St. Harutiun) with its own vestry (gavit). There are many khackkars (carved stone crosses) around these monuments. Kecharis distinct from similar complexes in Armenia as the main structures are arranged along the adjacent sides of a right angle accentuated by the main temple.
